Technology Initiative Will Save Time and Increase Efficiency During Lunch
At beginning of the 2013-14 school year, the Southwest Allen County Schools plans to implement a finger scanning system for our school lunch program. The information regarding this system will be shared with parents of current SACS students outlining the procedures, privacy statements, etc. This process may take some time to fully implement.
Why? The finger scanning option for our school cafeterias will help for the following reasons:
- Ease. Students will no longer need their student IDs when buying lunch, preventing confusion when a student ID is not available.
- Security. Students will not be able to use another student’s ID.
- Efficiency. Because SACS will not be using student ID cards or student numbers, getting participants through the lunch line will be much more efficient, allowing students more time to eat or study.
Privacy: A fingerprint image
will not be stored using the proposed fingerprint system. In other words, no fingerprints can be recreated from the template.
Opt-out Option: Parents will have the opportunity to opt-out of this program if they do not wish for their child to participate.
The Future: Our hope is to eventually expand this system to include finger scanning on buses and in classrooms to ensure safety and gather attendance information.
This information has been presented to the Board of School Trustees of Southwest Allen County Schools with a vote scheduled during an upcoming meeting.
