Email Spam 

Recently, SACS users have experienced some spam emails getting into their email accounts. In addition, there have been emails that CMT has been asked to determine if it was spam or not. Therefore,  please read this email to help us in fighting spam and safeguard your account.

Action you need to take:

If you clicked on the link in an email from today, yesterday, or in the past week from the examples below, change your network and email password and contact your building computer specialist or CMT at x2480. You may also email sfurniss@sacs.k12.in.us.

To change your password for the network and email:

  • Hold down CTRL and ALT keys on your keyboard
  • Press the DEL key and release all keys
  • Menu will appear
  • Select Change Password
  • Fill in your information


What CMT is doing to combat spam:

  • CMT constantly reconfigures our spam filter to block spam.
  • CMT is testing a second filter to determine if having two filters will help.
  • Since spam filters cannot catch all spam, CMT will continue to educate users on what is and isn’t spam. We sent some emails earlier this year and last school year in addition to this email. This will be an ongoing process so please take a few minutes to read CMT emails.


Simple Rules to Follow: (Below are several examples explaining these rules and what to look out for)

  • When in doubt, throw it out.
  • Emails from CMT will end with CMT Team so you know it came from us.
  • Delete emails that end in Help Desk, IT Support Help Desk, or IT Support.
  • Look at the address that it came from. If it is an unknown address it is likely spam.
  • Check the link by hovering your mouse over the link to see where it is directing you. The one from yesterday was from a SACS employee, but the link went to an unknown website.

Examples per the Rules Above:


Rule: Delete email from an unknown address.

Look at the email and who it came from. Below is an example that came from some unknown address.

Second example. This is a little different since it appears to come from someone at a different school district. K12 in an email address singles it is likely from a school.

Spam email on changing password. The link goes to an unknown url.


Rule: Delete emails where the link sends you to an unknown address.


This is an example from yesterday. It came from a SACS email account so it passes the known email account, but the link goes to an unknown address.

Last night, CMT blocked this user’s email account and cleared all emails this user was sending out.

 Example: Known good email.

This example doesn’t pass the rule of an email coming from an unknown source. However, a March 2 email from HR indicates this type of email is coming and you should act on it. Without the HR email, it could have been designated as spam.

Another example last year was an email with the SACS logo in it. The email looked official with that logo, but the link was to an unknown source.

These are two very difficult examples. So users must read emails carefully.


 Legitimate email but the person sending is unknown. An email went out from SACS HR indicating these emails would be received.
