Amy Hamilton, Homestead High School Counselor, has announced that Alison Mansfield, a Homestead Senior, was presented the 2012-2013 Mary Penrose Wayne Chapter and Allen County DAR Good Citizen Scholarship Award at a ceremony held at the Allen County Public Library on Friday, January 11, 2013.

The DAR Good Citizen Award is intended to encourage and reward good citizenship. Fifteen area DAR Good Citizen school-level winners were honored at the January 11 ceremony. The school winners included: Phillip Litchfield, Bishop Dwenger , Elizabeth Hess, Bishop Luers, Leigh Flegge, Blackhawk Christian, Katherine Schantz, Canterbury, Gabriel Gemperline, Carroll High School, Zach Heck, Concordia Lutheran High School, Kristien Alexander, Heritage, Alison Mansfield, Homestead, Talitha Fischer, Leo, Bryce Hieber, New Haven, Anthony Kiefer, Northrup, Alyssa Wyatt, Northside, Kenya Thomas, R. Nelson Snider, Brooklyne Beatty, South Side, and Carissa Eisenmann, Woodlan.  Alison Mansfield was selected the overall scholarship winner and Zach Heck and Carissa Eisenmann received honorable mentions.

The scholarship competition consists of two parts. First, each nominated student must describe how he/she manifests the qualities of a good citizen and must also submit an official copy of his/her high school transcript along with two letters of recommendation. Second, an essay administered under the supervision of faculty or a DAR member must be completed by the student in one sitting, within a two-hour time limit, and without the benefit of reference materials. This year’s essay topic was “How are our freedoms and responsibilities as good citizens changing?” Part I represents 70 percent of the overall score and Part II is 30 percent. Entries are evaluated by independent non-DAR judges, and a winning entry is then selected. Judges for this year’s competition included James Westerfield, Chief Fiduciary Officer, Lake City Bank-Wealth Advisory Group, Kathy Bruns, President, KB Search, and Linda Ruffolo, IPFW Executive Director of Development.

Ms. Mansfield will participate in the Good Citizen’s Luncheon on May 19, 2013 as part of the Indiana DAR State Convention in Indianapolis. She will be one of 13 Indiana Good Citizen Scholarship winners recognized at the luncheon who will have the opportunity to compete for the National DAR Good Citizen Scholarship.
