Homestead High School is proud to announce the names of five semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Jodi Camino, is the daughter of Tom and Lynn Camino, Susan Chen is the daughter of Yu Fang Li and Yaun di Chen, Skip Jester is the son of Troy and Karah Jester, Christopher Lutz is the son of Dale Lutz and Virginia Kreamer-Lutz, and Nathan Merz is the son of Jim and Alice Merz. These academically talented high school seniors will now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 national merit Scholarships worth about $32 million.

About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 U.S. high schools entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.  The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

To become a finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier qualifying test performance. The Semifinalist and a school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student’s self-descriptive essay and information about the semifinalist’s participation and leadership in school and community activities.

National Merit Scholarships will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. Those scholarship recipients will join more than 330,000 other distinguished young people who will have earned the Merit Scholar title.
